Security Guard Training in Illinois

Gaining a Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC) is the first requirement to becoming a security guard in the state of Illinois. The PERC informs prospective employers that one has successfully completed certain background checks via a fingerprint submission process.

As such, as soon as the PERC is obtained, one can begin the application to become a security guard in the great state of Illinois. Check-out the PERC page on the Division of Professional Regulation website to apply.

Please note that one is not automatically guaranteed a position with a security company or security agency after obtaining the PERC. One simply becomes qualified to be considered by a company or security agency for employment.

Illinois Security Guard Training Requirements:

Security Guard TrainingSimilar to other states across the United States, basic qualifications that must be met include:

  • Being of 18 years of age or older
  • Providing a social security number
  • Paying a fee to the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation of  $55
  • An attached passport-style photograph
  • Submission of the proper security clearance documents

The security clearance documents are obtained by completing the fingerprinting process. The process can be completed at a local Livescan Certified Vendor.

Please note that in the event that you have been convicted of felonies, you are not qualified to become employed as a security guard in the state of Illinois.

Furthermore, even after obtaining the PERC, one is still obligated to successfully complete 20-hours of security guard training. Such classes are made available at local community colleges as well as certified security guard training firms.
