To become an unarmed security guard and apply for registration in the state of California, prospective guards are required to be at least 18 years or older, undergo a criminal history background check administered through the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and complete a 40 hour security guard training course in order to build knowledge.
Note that the 40 hour course of Security Guard Training is divided into three segments within six months, and either a private patrol operator or certified training facility may oversee the training and final exam. Furthermore, 8 hours must be completed prior to being assigned on post, 16 hours must be completed within the first 30 days and 16 more hours must be completed within the first six months. As such, this equals a total a 40 hours.
To expedite online processing of the application to become a security guard, five steps must be followed:
The security guard has to have obtained the eight hour “Power to Arrest” training and successfully completed the exam
The applicant, private patrol operator or the training facility must submit the security guard application online here at: http://www.dca.ca.gov/bsis/online_services/online_licensing.shtml.#sthash.sK0Z5mAR.dpuf
USD $51.00 – Security Guard Application Fee

Once the FBI has received the application and the criminal history is clear, the security guard will show up on the Bureau’s Web site where it states “Verify a License”. The security guard can then be placed on assignment once a screen-print is made and used for registration. Please note that the actual registration for the security guard will be mailed and should be obtained within 10 to 15 days of business.
Security guards that are positioned on-duty at all times have to have a corrected and cleared security guard registration or screen-print of their approval from the Bureau’s website and a legal photo of identification.
