In order to become an unarmed security guard in the state of Washington , security guard training and a license are required. The licensing procedure is overseen by the Washington State Department of Licensing.

  • Being of 18 years of age or older
  • Showing proof of being a United Stated citizen
  • Having good moral standards and character
  • Having no drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Having no conviction of felonies within the last 10 years
  • Submitting to being tested for drugs (this could be ongoing)
  • Submitting a fingerprint card
  • Having good moral standards and character
  • Having not committed any acts of fraud
  • Being hired or have an offer of hire from a licensed company or security agency
  • Successfully completing all pre-assignment security guard training necessities

Additional conditions that could be of assistance include having a valid driver’s license, being in good physical shape, having the ability to stand for extended periods of time and possessing thorough communication skills.

Security Guard Training Curriculum

Basic training subjects that are taught within the security guard training course involve:

  • The role of private security
  • Legal aspects
  • Patrol and observation
  • Incident response
  • Security resources: Surveillance operation and documentation
  • Customer service issues: Working with and addressing the public
  • First aid overview
  • Report writing

Note that these are just the basic requirements and more subjects can be taken and added.

Fees include the cost of the license of $111 and may include training material if the company or security agency hiring does not provide it.
